Accounting firm Deloitte will launch an unpaid leave program as of April 1 to save costs in the economic downturn.

According to an email sent by the firm's human resources department on Tuesday, all employees in China are required to participate in a personal leave program that entails taking a minimum of four days personal leave each month.

The program, which also applies to 2010, will be reviewed in October by the management team taking into account the economic outlook and the firm's situation.

Meanwhile, the firm set a monthly cap for cash payment of overtime, which is also effective from April.

In January, Ernst & Young, another of the world's big four accounting firms, launched a one-month unpaid leave program in China, which required staff members to take up to four weeks of voluntary unpaid leave by June 30.
