China's southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, gateway to southeast Asia, is to invest more than 400 billion yuan ($58.61 billion) in transportation infrastructure over the next five years.

Addressing a press conference held by the State Council Information Office here Tuesday, Ma Biao, chairman of the autonomous region, said the government of Guangxi would give top priority to the development of transportation infrastructure by improving an existing passage linking southwest China to the South China Sea.

It also plans to build Guangxi into the transportation hub from China to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has a population of 50 million, 32.85 percent are of the ethnic Zhuang Group.
