Acetyl maker to boost investment in China

Q: Have you any plans for further investment in China this year?

A: We have other investments in the pipeline now. We have an application center that is really under way with our engineered material business and emulsions business. The concept here is to build application centers for longer-term R&D; the true research and development. It is a global research center, not only for China. The center will be opened in Shanghai in 2010.

The largest investment we are going to make in China in the next few years is people. The number will be significantly increased because we are going to hire more people here in China to make us successful.

Q: As a chemical company, what do you do regarding environment protection?

A: Celanese abides by the highest standards in Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) management. In 2002, we implemented a global EHS management system that supports the development and standardization of global best practices.

As Celanese continually enhances its product portfolio, our global management system supports the integration of new facilities by providing standard expectations. The Celanese management system is based on ISO standards and has been third-party certified in many facilities and countries worldwide.

We have series of initiatives. We recently published a sustainability report on the environmental, health and safety. All these we will do globally, including China. We have the responsible care concept. We have environmental, health and safety standards that help us to implement world-class processes. There are also real training behind these standards for our staff.

We also want to reduce emissions. Since 2001, Celanese has reduced its green house gas by 37 percent, energy usage by 28 percent, air emission intensity by 23 percent, waste generation lowered significantly. By 2010, we want to reduce waste by 25 percent, energy by 20 percent and air emissions by 30 percent.
