Road security beefed up for Games

Passengers traveling to Beijing by long-distance buses during the Olympic Games have to give their names and ID card numbers while booking tickets, the Ministry of Transport said yesterday.

The measure applies to ship passengers traveling from Dalian to Tianjin too.

And the Beijing municipal public security bureau said it would post armed police, with sniffer dogs, metal detectors and scanners, at all the road entry points to prevent terrorists (or destructive material) from slipping into the capital.

These are part of the anti-terrorism measures the government has taken to ensure a safe and smooth Games.

The authorities have also asked Shandong, Liaoning and Hebei provinces and Tianjin municipality to intensify checks on roads and check passengers' luggage at long-distance bus depots.
