Starting in 2008, new vehicles on sale in the Beijing market must meet the China IV emission standard, according to Ji Lin, vice-mayor of the capital city. The Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau also confirmed the implementation of the China IV emission standard ahead of schedule.

According to the commitments to the International Olympic Committee, Beijing will enforce the China IV standard in 2008, but increasing automobiles and a bad peripheral environment are two major problems for Beijing in tackling pollution.

According to the bureau, the plans for the implementation of the China IV emission standard have been submitted to related departments for examination and approval. Li Tiejun with the bureau said that Beijing will carry out the new standard in 2008, when new vehicles that don't meet the standard will be forbidden to sell.
