ICH festival kicks off cultural showcases

The 9th International Festival of Intangible Cultural Heritage opened in Chengdu, Sichuan province, on Wednesday.

Hosted by the Sichuan government, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and UNESCO, the festival, themed "Promoting Cultural Exchange, Revitalizing Heritage, and Sharing a Better Life", introduces the innovative "Guest Country and Guest City" model this year. The event features three main sections — Vibrant Heritage: Tianfu Parade, Diverse Heritage: Dialogue on Inheritance, and Charming Heritage: International Exhibition — alongside three special segments — "Creative Living" (International IP Licensing Fair for Heritage Brands), "A Taste of Heritage" (International Food Week), and "Healthy Living" (Traditional Medicine Promotion Week).

With over 600 intangible cultural heritage projects from more than 60 countries and regions, and more than 400 Chinese ICH inheritors showcasing their crafts, the festival highlights the integration of traditional culture into modern life. It also demonstrates China's systematic approach to heritage preservation, the dynamic energy of young inheritors, and the role of ICH in driving socioeconomic development.

Taking place through June 3, the festival coincides with Dragon Boat Festival celebrations in Chengdu, when dragon boat races, cultural performances, and traditional craft demonstrations will offer residents and visitors vibrant experiences.
