Xu Beihong, one of the preeminent figures of the 20th-century Chinese art, is known for rendering a heroic, unyielding spirit to his subjects.

The human figures under his brushes, whether it is a mythological character, an ancient philosopher or a rural woman, often sparkle with courage and wisdom.

His depictions of other lives, such as roosters crowing in rains, flying birds embracing fierce winds and wounded lions, also become symbols of dynamics.

The Peon Art Museum Chongqing will open on Dec 17 an exhibition to show some of the most classic paintings and drawings by Xu in tribute to his people's perseverance and the magnificence of nature.
