Some businesspeople also took advantage of the border reopening,

"Brit flying into DC from Toronto this morning. Going this route to make some midday meetings for work. Toronto was a bit of a mess this morning. Big queues at preclearance today," one announced on Reddit.

People who have received vaccines approved for emergency use by the World Health Organization also will be allowed to enter the US by air.

US citizens, green card holders and those entering on an immigrant visa are exempt from the requirement.

Children under 18 are exempt from the vaccination requirement, but those between ages 2-17 are required to produce a negative test result within three days of travel.

The pandemic has dramatically hurt the travel industry. According to the US Travel Association, in 2020, the industry suffered an unprecedented loss of $492 billion, a decline of 42 percent.
