At a local temple near Mingshashan 1997  [Photo by Bruce Connolly/chinadaily.com.cn]

On the edge of town, towards Mingshashan or the 'Singing Sand Mountains' I heard chanting from a small temple. Investigating, I came upon a lively scene where local, mostly elderly residents, walked in a line led by monks and nuns. As I sat watching, I was given fruit and bread. A communal vegetarian meal was prepared for everyone in attendance including me!
