The mid and late 1990's was a time before the large mainly tourist crowds of today. It was much quieter although it had already by then attracted several travellers' cafes. They proved to be good sources of practical advice along with cycle hiring. Usually I would discover a pleasant venue, use it as a base while appreciating the often spicy range of vegetable-based meals served up within.
