US congressman offers anniversary congratulations to Chinese

CHICAGO: A US legislator and regular visitor to China has praised the country's progress and wished it well for its 60th anniversary.

"I wish all of the Chinese community, not only in Chicago, but in China and all over the world a happy 60th anniversary," Congressman Danny K. Davis, who represents the 7th district in metropolitan Chicago, which includes the vibrant Chicago Chinatown community, told Xinhua in a recent interview.

For Davis, Chinese people love their homeland and are proud of their origin.

"Many of the people that I interacted with, although they have acquired American citizenship, their hearts remain in China. They have all kinds of events and activities to proclaim and display their Chinese cultural heritage," he said.

Davis was very excited about his most recent trip to China, describing it as "a wonderful experience."

Talking about the changes he saw in China, Davis said: "The first time I was there, I saw basically many people riding bicycles. There are still a lot of them now but I also saw a lot of brand new cars."

"The last two times I have been in China, one could tell that the quality of life and the quality of living is moving upward in China, as well as it is moving in other developing nations but I don't think they are anywhere near being at the rate or in as massive a way as China," Davis said.

Davis said of Chicago's Chinatown: "It is one of the most vibrant communities you can find anywhere in the world."

He said he had a lot of Chinese friends and "a real solid friendship with the Chinese American community."

"I usually go there almost every week and there are always some cultural, educational or social service activities."

Commenting on the US-China relationship, Davis said: "It is good because we are having more interaction, more business exchange, and more cultural exchange."

"So the relationship is continuing to warm up and flow and to develop at a good speed ... And we are going to see more harmony between the United States and China."
