Swiss FM computer network attacked

GENEVA: The computer network of the Swiss Foreign Ministry has been the target of a "very professional" attack, the official Swissinfo.ch news website reported on Monday.

The computer systems were targeted with the intent of gathering specific information, but the extent of the breach is unknown and ministry officials did not say what information was targeted, according to the report.

The hack, which was apparently designed not to be noticed, was discovered on Thursday by specialists at the Foreign Ministry and at software giant Microsoft.

The Foreign Ministry is still trying to find out the source of the attack, and it has cut its network's connection to the internet, Swissinfo.ch said.
