France to provide financial help for Philippines

PARIS: France has decided to provide 800, 000 euros (1.12 million U.S. dollars) to help the typhoon-hit Philippines, the French Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday in a statement.

France has decided to provide its contribution to help the Philippine people facing food shortage caused by typhoon Ketsana and Parma. The sum will be poured immediately into the United Nation's World Food Program (WFP), the statement said.

According to the ministry, UN-WFP has deployed food relief of 20 million U.S. dollars in the southeast Asian country, as well as logistics and communication assistance worth 2.6 million dollars and aerial service worth 3.9 million dollars.

Ketsana and Parma have claimed nearly 1,000 lives in the Philippines, and left hundreds of thousands of people living in shelters. Damage to infrastructure and agriculture has affected millions of people.
