Traditional folk music instruments were on show in the county of Huocheng on Jan 21, with 27grassroots artists from towns and villages taking part. The musical training sessions were held thanks to the administration of culture, radio, film and television based in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.

During the training, the administration invited retired music teachers to teach participants how to play the dutar, a traditional two-stringed lute with a long neck which is common in the Xinjiang region, Iran and South Asia.

Grassroots artists attending the training sessions were of different ages; one artist ws even in his 70s.

"These artists always put on free performances for locals," said Zeng Limin, director of Huocheng county's cultural center, located in the Xinjiang region.

He went on to say that Huocheng county's cultural center supported the training and aimed to improve artists' skills and help them organize more cultural activities in rural areas.

The training received warm response; one participant from the region's Moerhu pasture said "during the training, the teacher help me correct my mistakes in playing dutar, and I also got opportunities to exchanges ideas with other artists."
