Huiyuan town in Huocheng county, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, held its New Year’s painting and calligraphy competition on Dec 19.

Gathering 47 calligraphies and 18 paintings to celebrate New Year and to bring people together, the painting and calligraphy competition focused on fighting against the religious extremism, with many farmers and herdsmen showing their paintings, calligraphies and paper cut works.

It was the County's idea, originally, to get locals to express their ideas about their lives through art works. The exhibition got a lot of attention and was naturally popular among the public, with Yang Yanming, a painting fan saying, "I drew pines this time hoping that all ethnic groups get together to make the better livings."

The works will be displayed in different villages and schools to increase awareness for the ethnic unit.
