Shenbei New Area in Shenyang is aiming to develop into an emerging strategic industries cluster, with a focus on food, medicine, aviation and rail transport.

According to information from the Eighth Session of the 12th People’s Congress of Liaoning Province, which was held on Jan 17, Shenbei New Area will attach importance to constructing complete industry chains in those sectors.

As a national-level economic and technological development zone, the new area is renowned for its food and medicine industries, which are currently the pillar industries of the area.

As of Jan 17, 454 food and medicine businesses had settled in the area. They included processing of dairy products, producing edible oil, beverages, biological feed and biomedical material. In 2016, the output of these industries hit 30.5 billion yuan ($ 4.45 billion).

“We will give full play to the area’s industrial foundation to construct complete industry chains for the food and medicine industries,” said Li Qiang, head of Shenbei New Area. “To further boost the area’s development, the next stop is to work on two emerging strategic industries, aviation and rail transport.”

Currently, Shenbei New Area has introduced 49 aviation items, including 34 aerospace components, six aviation operations and three new aviation materials. The whole output of the aviation industry in the area reached 720 million yuan in 2016.

A Shenyang-based subsidiary of China’s aviation equipment giant, the Aviation Industry Corporation of China, has confirmed its settlement in Shenbei New Area this year.

It is anticipated that three major projects covering the construction of a helicopter air rescue base, and light aircraft and graphene manufacturing, will also settle in the new area in 2017.

The other emerging strategic industry on Shenbei New Area’s priority list is rail transport.

Shenyang Liyuan Rail Transit Equipment Co Ltd is the leading business in that field in the area. It completed construction and commenced operations in October 2016. The business mainly manufactures locomotives and carriages. It will also conduct vehicle assembly when approved by the authorities.
