Updated: 2016-01-28
The Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, Henan province is one of the finest examples of Buddhist art in China, making it a popular tourist destination all year round.
Even in winter, the grottoes are lit by the low-lying sun, making all that surrounds shine with a breathtaking vibrancy, attracting visitors from home and abroad.
All the living things appear silent, tranquil and at one with nature, as the cloudless blue sky embraces the sun in solemn beauty.
The Yishui River stretches like a ribbon of silk from the towering mountains, following a winding and at times torturous course, but the calm and sparkling water renders a serene scene.
The high limestone cliffs face the mild winter wind adorned with thousands of delicately carved statues of Buddha. Gazing into the distance, the glistening and vivid statues appear with expressions of love, serenity and happiness. The craftsmanship of the ancient sculptors is undeniable.
"To enjoy a grander sight, climb to a greater height", says an ancient Chinese proverb, and standing atop the mountains, a vista appears of an azure blue sky, sinuous mountains and crystal waters down below.
As the fresh air is breathed and the majestic scenery surveyed, one cannot help but feel at one with nature's beauty.
