International cooperation summit begins Sept 16

The International Cooperation Summit on Port Industries was held in Caofeidian, Tangshan in Hebei province on September 16.

The meeting attracted about 1,000 participants from more than 30 countries and regions, including Japan, Germany, Sweden, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Many of the attending multinational companies were among the world’s top 500, such as Royal Dutch Shell, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Emerson Electric Company, and the Hitachi Group. Some major Chinese state-owned companies and private enterprises were also among the league, including the Shougang Corporation, Huadian Group, and China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation.

Chen Guoying, deputy secretary of the CPC Tangshan Committee and mayor of Tangshan, addressed the meeting, inviting companies at home and abroad to take part in the economic development of Caofeidian, an island of investment potential in Tangshan. Chen expressed Tangshan’s willingness to expand cooperation with domestic and foreign partners on the basis of mutual benefit and common development. Cooperation will commence in the following fields:

1. Further steel processing – to promote the production of high-end further steel processing products utilizing the advantages of major harbors in Tangshan.

2. Equipment manufacturing industry – expand cooporations on shidbuilding and ship-repairing, marine engineering equipment, large machinery, transportation equipment, engineering plant, mechanical parts, etc.

3. Chemical industry – further cooperation on petrochemical, coal chemical, marine chemicals, household chemicals and fine chemicals in particular.

4. Logistics industry – with its fabulous geographic advantages, Caofeidian will deepen its large-scale logistics and third and forth-party logistics provider operations.

5. Emerging strategic industries, including new energy, energy saving and environmental protection, electronic information and recycling-based economy.

6. High-end tertiary industry and infrastructure and city constructions.

Major participants of the meeting included Sun Xiaohua, vice-chairman of the All-China Federation of Industry & Commerce, Cheng Fei, former vice-minister of the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, Guo Jianxin, vice-secretory general of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, director of the Japan-China economics office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and executive director of the Japanese Business Federation.

Meanwhile, the meeting was also attended by ambassadors to China from 28 foreign countries, including Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, and Pakistan, and officials from 10 Chinese harbor cities.
