Electricity empowers bumper pear harvest in Puyang

Puyang in Henan province, located at the junction of Hebei, Shandong, and Henan provinces, is endowed with fertile sediment from the ancient Yellow River channel and abundant water resources, creating favorable natural conditions for modern specialty agriculture.

Under the national rural vitalization initiative, Hanzhang town has prioritized high‑quality development driven by snow pears. The local snow pear has grown into a competitive agricultural brand boosting rural incomes and shared prosperity.

Covering more than 3,000 mu (200 hectares), the snow pear orchard operated by Yujia Professional Planting Cooperative operates under a circular eco‑farming system. It applies green measures including under‑canopy goose grazing for weed control, precise biogas‑slurry fertilization and eco‑friendly insect traps. The base produces over 2.8 million jin (1,400 metric tons) of snow pears each year with an output value exceeding 4 million yuan ($595,133.52), and its fruits are sold across major domestic cities nationwide.

Building on local ecological advantages, Hanzhang town has moved beyond traditional mono-cropping and pursued green circular development and industrial integration. It promotes the integrated development of snow pear cultivation, eco‑friendly breeding, agricultural processing and rural tourism, while the cooperative has developed a low‑cost, low‑carbon circular orchard system through ecological farming techniques.

Moving away from a sole reliance on fresh fruit sales, the cooperative has developed a series of processed snow‑pear products to raise added agricultural value. It has also launched orchard picking and sightseeing programs, converting plantations into rural tourism sites that integrate leisure, harvest experiences and retail.

To address the critical bottleneck of fresh fruit's short shelf life and limited market reach, and to close the cold-chain logistics gap, the base built a 600‑ton cold‑storage facility worth one million yuan in December 2019. The facility prolongs fruit freshness by more than three months, eases seasonal supply pressures and enables high‑quality snow pears to reach major national markets.

The booming industry has brought benefits to hundreds of local households involved in planting, processing and cold‑chain links, lifting average annual household incomes by over 10,000 yuan and increasing agricultural efficiency.

Snow pear production across its full cycle requires a highly stable power supply. State Grid Puyang Power Supply Company has rolled out targeted services to meet its seasonal round‑the‑clock power demands.

Zhai Yajun, head of the Yujia Professional Planting Cooperative in Hanzhang town,  said the company has eliminated voltage fluctuations in peak irrigation periods and carries out regular on‑site inspections of lines and equipment. With a stable power supply, the cooperative plans to steadily expand its deep‑processing capacity and upgrade its cold‑chain storage facilities, extending and refining the snow pear value chain.

Supported by a healthy environment and stable power services, Hanzhang town is advancing green agriculture and industrial upgrading via its snow pear sector, writing a new chapter in rural vitalization.
