State Grid Puyang: Electricity fuels aquaculture prosperity

Updated:2026-07-28

In July, amid the sweltering heat of midsummer, Wangchenggu township in Puyang county — located in the lower Yellow River floodplain — entered the year's most critical window for largemouth bass fry breeding. The area is crisscrossed by rivers and canals with abundant water resources, and is naturally endowed for aquaculture. In recent years, the township has used these advantages to develop a specialized fishery industry, gradually transitioning from traditional free-range practices to large-scale, facility-based fry breeding. Largemouth bass aquaculture has become a wealth-generating sector that drives farmer income growth and fortifies the foundation of rural industry.

Henan Yuwan Fisheries Co, located in Yaozhuang village, Wangchenggu township, is the leading enterprise in local largemouth bass fry cultivation. Its facility features 15 contiguous breeding greenhouses housing 60 standardized aquaculture ponds operating in continuous cycles, with annual fry production exceeding seven million. The company's fry, prized for their robust constitution and rapid growth, are in perennially high demand across Henan and neighboring provinces, with supply consistently falling short of market needs.

Inside the greenhouses, humid air laden with the sound of rushing water greets visitors. Aeration equipment runs, water circulates through the ponds, and dense schools of fry dart swiftly through the water. As aquaculture becomes more refined, technologies such as constant temperature control and dynamic water quality regulation have been widely adopted, steadily improving fry survival rates and breeding efficiency.

However, this intensification has imposed stringent demands on power supply reliability: aerators, temperature control systems, and water circulation equipment must operate 24/7 without interruption. Any oxygen supply disruption poses a catastrophic risk of mass fry mortality. Compounding this, peak summer electricity demand coincides with the volatile weather patterns of the Yellow River flood season, creating the year's highest period of operational safety pressure.

Recognizing the elevated risks associated with summer aquaculture electricity usage, State Grid Puyang Power Supply Co (State Grid Puyang) developed a dedicated fisheries power assurance plan and dispatched personnel for targeted on-site inspections. Staff members examined the distribution room and end-point distribution boxes, identified electrical safety hazards in core breeding equipment, and monitored voltage and load fluctuations along power lines — remediating identified issues on the spot.

Additionally, they explained agricultural electricity tariff incentives tailored to the enterprise's consumption profile, provided energy efficiency optimization recommendations based on breeding cycles, and established a dedicated supply assurance mechanism for high-temperature and flood-season conditions, conducting regular voluntary inspections to ensure reliable electricity for stable aquaculture production.

"Summer brings heavy electricity loads, and equipment failure cutting off oxygen is our biggest fear. Your thorough inspections give us much greater confidence in our breeding operations," said Zhang Linbing, director of Henan Yuwan Fisheries Co. Currently in the decisive phase of largemouth bass fry breeding, the region is steadily enhancing both breeding capacity and fry quality. Backed by continuously improving supporting infrastructure and power services, and underpinned by a steadily optimized business environment, the initiative is driving quality and efficiency gains in specialized aquaculture, injecting sustained momentum into rural industrial vitalization.
