New substation boosts Jiaxing manufacturing growth
A major power project in Jiaxing, Zhejiang province, has gone into operation, supporting the region's manufacturing expansion and its emerging power system demonstration zone.
The 220-kilovolt Ningyan Substation, a key project under Jiaxing's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–30), recently began service. It will help to ease power shortages in Haining, improve the regional grid, and strengthen electricity supply for industry, homes, and renewable energy.
Jiaxing has accelerated industrial upgrading in recent years. The Jianshan area of Haining has grown into a modern industrial park focused on advanced manufacturing, including new energy equipment, environmental technologies, and electronics.
Continuous expansion by leading renewable energy firms such as Jinko and Chint has raised demand for reliable and well-planned local power infrastructure.
Located in Huangwan town, Haining, next to the Jianshan industrial cluster, the Ningyan Substation serves the entire Huangwan area and surrounding districts. Rapid growth in high-end manufacturing, new materials, and port-related industries, plus rising residential power use, had strained the existing grid.
Challenges included limited supply capacity, long transmission distances, weak load transfer, and poor reliability.
To meet future demand, State Grid Jiaxing Power Supply Company expanded grid investment and built new infrastructure in advance.
The Ningyan Substation is the second 220-kV substation to be commissioned in the area during the current Five-Year Plan period.
The project is seen as the heart of the grid. Its first phase includes two 240-megavolt-ampere main transformers, four 220-kV outgoing lines, six 110-kV lines, and nine 20-kV lines. Together with three existing substations, Ningyan optimizes the regional 220-kV grid, greatly improving reliability and transfer capacity.
The substation also advances the Jianshan demonstration zone for China's new power system. The area has a high density of solar power and advanced digital grid technology. By coordinating with local solar, storage, and distribution networks, the substation helps create a more resilient and flexible energy system.
With rising summer temperatures and electricity demand, the new substation will ease pressure on the regional grid and give local businesses confidence in stable power supply during peak periods.
