Shaoxing, Zhejiang: Maiden inspection secures festive power supply amid cold wave
With temperatures dropping across Shaoxing and the Spring Festival travel rush boosting electricity demand, power supply assurance has entered a critical stage.
Maintenance crews from State Grid Shaoxing Power Supply Company completed the maiden inspection of both main transformers on Feb 10 at the 220 kV Binhai Substation, reinforcing grid stability amid the cold snap and ensuring reliable power for the holiday.
The substation, located in Keqiao district's Binhai Development Zone, is the key power hub for the local industrial zone.
Its two main transformers began operations in late 2024. According to substation regulations, the first inspection was scheduled this year to verify performance under extreme weather and peak load conditions.
Project manager Xu Mingkai said that the period marks a convergence of cold wave response and Spring Festival assurance, stressing the critical role of main transformer stability. The inspection covered key equipment across both transformers, including current transformers, circuit breakers, and protective devices.
Crews also replaced the oil conservator of Unit 2 to fix an internal leakage defect in its corrugated diaphragm. Using a vacuum oil purifier, they drained the old unit before a crane hoisted away the 4.9-metric-ton component. Multi-disciplinary teams coordinated closely to install the new conservator, restore equipment, complete testing and rectify defects.
In response to the severe cold snap, State Grid Shaoxing had taken early, targeted actions. Adhering to the principle of prioritizing livelihoods and critical services, it has ramped up meticulous maintenance work.
In 2026, the company has already completed maiden inspections of four 220 kV main transformers at Ma'an, Keyan, and Binhai substations, alongside comprehensive maintenance at Shuangqiao Substation — significantly boosting the reliability of key hub substations.
To address surging demand from the travel season, the company proactively forecasted load trends and optimized grid operations, with a focus on secure power supply for residential heating, transportation hubs, medical facilities, and other essential services tied to the homecoming rush.
These measures reflect State Grid Shaoxing's commitment to ensuring a warm and peaceful Spring Festival for local residents.
