Nanjing's first provincial-level major project of this year connects to power grid
State Grid Nanjing Power Supply Company completed the power supply commissioning for the headquarters of Jiangsu Women and Children Health Hospital on Jan 24. This has become the first provincial-level major project in Nanjing to be connected to power suppliers this year.
Nanjing recently released the list of its major economic and social development projects for 2026, with the headquarters of Jiangsu Women and Children Health Hospital included as a provincial-level major project.
The project is located in Xishanqiao subdistrict, Yuhuatai district, and is the only newly built headquarters of a provincial-level maternal and child health institution in the province.
Covering a total area of 130 mu (8.67 hectares), with a total construction area of about 269,700 square meters and a total investment of 3.34 billion yuan ($480 million), the facility will accommodate 1,500 beds and handle an average daily outpatient and emergency volume of 8,000 visits upon completion.
It will serve as a comprehensive medical institution based in Nanjing, serving the entire province and setting a national example, playing a significant role in enhancing regional medical service capabilities and improving the maternal and child health security system.

For medical institutions, a stable and uninterrupted power supply is not only the foundation for the normal operation of medical equipment but also critical to ensuring patient safety. "Key areas such as hospital operating rooms, ICUs, neonatal departments, refrigeration rooms, and chiller units have extremely high requirements for power supply continuity and quality. Any power interruption could directly threaten patients' lives," said Wu Jun, deputy general manager of the project unit.
During the early stages of the project, State Grid Nanjing proactively engaged with the project team, leveraging its specialized service mechanism for major projects to conduct multiple on-site inspections and understand the power demand.
Based on the power consumption characteristics of hospital outpatient departments, medical technology buildings, inpatient buildings, refrigeration rooms, and other facilities, as well as the high-reliability requirements of important first-tier power users, a dual-power supply and four-circuit line solution was determined after multiple rounds of discussions.
This solution fully considers the current status and connection conditions of the surrounding power grid, with a total installed capacity of 27,500 kilovolt-amperes.
The four circuits serve as backups for each other, enabling rapid switching to a backup power source in case of a fault in any one circuit. Combined with an uninterrupted emergency power supply on the client side, this ensures the uninterrupted operation in critical medical areas such as operating rooms and intensive care units, providing strong and reliable power support for hospital operations.

To ensure the project's timely connection and operation, State Grid Nanjing adopted a service model of "early involvement and early planning", synchronizing power infrastructure with hospital construction, significantly reducing the power connection time.
During implementation, the company actively assisted users in resolving challenges related to construction and administrative approvals, prioritized material availability, and facilitated seamless transitions between civil construction and electrical installation processes, effectively shortening the construction cycle.
"The civil engineering for the project's external lines was handled by the government, while the electrical facilities were funded by the power supply company. This government-enterprise collaboration model saved users considerable costs for external power line construction, offering tangible convenience," explained Qi Jiawei, deputy team leader of the distribution engineering team at the fourth service center of State Grid Nanjing.
For 2026, Nanjing has scheduled 516 major projects, including 479 implementation projects and 37 preliminary projects, with the annual planned investment increasing by 1.2 percent year-on-year. State Grid Nanjing will closely align with the principle of "cultivating a first-class business environment with excellent practices and enhancing service efficiency for enterprises and the public", further refining and implementing measures to improve the business environment. The company will provide high-quality, full-lifecycle power services for a number of major projects, contributing to Nanjing's high-quality economic and social development.
