State Grid Suqian Power Supply Company: Smart electricity illuminates zero-carbon path for enterprise development

Technical professionals from State Grid Suqian Power Supply Company conducted special safety inspections on rooftop photovoltaic (PV) power generation systems on Dec 8 at Jiangsu Shuyang Tongkun Hengyang Chemical Fiber Plant — a flagship enterprise in China's chemical fiber sector that has fully developed a smart zero-carbon park. Covering a total area of 1.33 million square meters across the factory's rooftop space, contiguous arrays of blue PV modules shimmered under the sun, creating a vivid scene of "green power-driven production" alongside the operational energy storage systems and intelligent street lighting within the park premises. Inside the production facilities, manufacturing lines for new-type functional fibers operated at full load, with nearly 40 percent of the electrical energy powering these production facilities derived from on-site distributed PV power generation stations.

"Monthly electricity expenses were once a significant operational outlay. Today, with PV green power complemented by energy storage peak shaving, our production-related electricity costs have been directly reduced by 35 percent — yielding substantial annual savings for the enterprise!" said Yu Jianqiang, director of thermoelectric operations at Tongkun Hengyang Chemical Fiber Co, while referencing real-time data displayed on the central control system. Since the commissioning of the PV power generation system, the workshops have fully implemented the "self-generation for self-consumption and surplus power grid feed-in" operational mode. During periods of peak power demand, energy storage systems can provide supplementary power supply, completely resolving the historical challenge of power shortages. On extreme high-temperature days, the PV system achieves a maximum daily output of 27,000 kilowatts, effectively alleviating the enterprise's power supply pressure and ensuring the continuous stable operation of production lines.

As a core production hub of a leading enterprise in China's chemical fiber sector, Tongkun Shuyang Park stands as a key industrial project in Jiangsu province, boasting a planned power capacity of 360 megawatts and substantial annual electricity demand. To accelerate the park's green transition, State Grid Suqian has further deepened the in-depth reform and upgrading initiative for state-owned enterprises, striving to construct a government-enterprise-power symbiotic system and support the provision of integrated solutions that combine power supply and energy efficiency. In 2022, the company facilitated Tongkun in launching Jiangsu's first 220 kilovolt industrial project featuring government-enterprise co-funded external power transmission lines. From 2023 to 2024, it assisted the enterprise in grid-connecting 23.61 MW of rooftop PV capacity (Phase I and Phase II). In January 2025, a 13 MW energy storage system was formally commissioned, and in November, power supply services were further upgraded to develop a smart zero-carbon park for the enterprise — integrating comprehensive monitoring, refined management and value-added services. This initiative delivers systematic support for energy conservation and emission reduction, marking the company's strategic transformation from a traditional "energy supplier" to a comprehensive "development value partner".

"The essence of a smart zero-carbon park lies in achieving precise energy matching and efficient utilization through data-driven technologies," said Wu Yuan, a technical specialist from the marketing department of State Grid Shuyang County Power Supply Company. The park has established an intelligent energy-carbon management platform that aggregates real-time data from over 20,000 monitoring points — encompassing PV output, energy storage system status, and production load — and executes AI-enabled precise dispatching based on weather forecast analytics. Solar-generated green electricity is prioritized for critical load scenarios such as production workshops and all-electric kitchens, while surplus power is stored in energy storage systems and dispatched during peak demand periods. This forms a closed-loop "generation-storage-consumption" energy cycle, substantially elevating the local consumption rate of new energy resources.

In addition to the in-depth integration of PV and energy storage, the park is equipped with supporting green facilities such as waste heat recovery systems, smart streetlights, and electric vehicle charging stations, creating a full-scenario low-carbon ecosystem. According to estimates, once all projects are fully operational, the park will generate an annual power output of 129 million kilowatt-hours, saving 39,700 metric tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 128,600 tons each year — equivalent to planting 350,000 trees annually. "Our products' carbon footprint has been greatly reduced, making them more competitive in the international market," Yu Jianqiang said. Green energy has become the main driver of the enterprise's high-quality development.

Today, the Tongkun Smart Zero-Carbon Park is leveraging the innovative integration of PV, energy storage, and smart management systems to achieve a win-win situation for both production efficiency and ecological benefits. On sunny days, high PV output supports the park's "near-zero carbon" operation; during peak load periods, the energy storage system provides accurate power supplementation; and the smart platform ensures efficient energy utilization throughout the process. This initiative sets a replicable and scalable example for the green transformation of high-energy-consuming industries, facilitating the implementation of the "dual carbon" goals at the frontline of industrial development.
