State Grid Jiaxing debuts vehicle-to-grid reverse charging
Jiaxing in Zhejiang province launched its first vehicle-to-grid reverse charging project on Sept 1, enabling electric vehicles to feed power back into the grid, generate income for owners, and enhance grid stability.
This breakthrough technology transforms EVs from energy consumers into mobile power banks, allowing them to sell electricity back to the grid during peak demand — earning income while supporting grid stability.
In a morning demonstration, workers from the State Grid Jiaxing Power Supply Company showcased the V2G bidirectional charging process. Users can now interact with the grid simply by scanning a QR code via a WeChat mini-program, enabling seamless two-way energy flow between the vehicle and the grid. This innovation breaks the traditional model, in which charging stations draw power solely from the grid.
"I usually charge my car at home at 0.38 yuan (5.3 cents) per kilowatt-hour at night, but here I can earn over 2 yuan for each kWh fed back into the grid," said resident Chen Linfeng, one of the first users to experience V2G reverse charging. "It's very convenient — just a few minutes, and I can earn money while supporting the grid. It's a win-win."
"We encourage EV owners to participate in V2G interactions when their battery is sufficiently charged, especially during peak load periods," said Jin Zhanjie, deputy director of the Marketing Department at the State Grid Haining Power Supply Company.
"In addition to base earnings from selling electricity, participants can receive a 2-yuan incentive per kWh during peak V2G response periods, further motivating engagement." By charging at low nighttime rates and selling back during daytime peaks, EV owners can achieve significant economic benefits.
The State Grid Jiaxing Power Supply Company plans to expand intelligent EV-grid interactions citywide, exploring vehicle-to-grid applications at public charging stations, industrial parks, and residential communities. The initiative aims to optimize market mechanisms and allow more EV owners to benefit from participating in grid peak regulation.
