In the downstream section of the Weihe River Beiwaihuan Bridge in Zhucheng, Shandong province, a photo was recently taken of nationally second-level key protected waterfowl, great crested grebes and common coots playing together.
Meanwhile, in the Sanlizhuang Reservoir located in the urban area, a pair of great crested grebes can be seen swimming close together near the shore. These waterfowl have unique feathers on their heads, almost like they’re sporting a trendy hairstyle.

A surprising scene unfolds as a great crested grebe picks up a strand of water grass and presents it to the other grebe. The two great crested grebes then stand tall in the water, gazing at each other affectionately, nodding in unison, and twirling and leaping in unison.
Great crested grebes and common coots have also been observed in the Fuqi River. Both kinds of waterfowl are diving predators, which means they have very high requirements for water quality.
In recent years, various measures have been taken in Zhucheng to strengthen the protection and management of the water environment. These efforts aim to facilitate the survival of more aquatic animals and plants, ensuring clean water, beautiful rivers, and pristine riverbanks. (Edited by Huang Junyao)
