Centennial fair in Shandong county brings both liveliness and cultural preservation
The annual fair in Shawo town, Dongming county, Shandong province, kicked off in early April, drawing a large crowd of local villagers.
The Shawo Zen Temple, a central structure at the fairgrounds, is a testament to the rich history of the region. Its origins trace back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907), and it flourished during the Song and Yuan dynasties (960-1368). The temple, as it presently stands today, took shape during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911). Despite enduring the ravages of war and floods, the temple was restored by the Dongming county government in 1993. It now stands as a cultural relic under protection.
The fair, which was buzzed with peddling and bargaining sounds, reflects much bustling human warmth.

To uphold order and safety standards during the county fair, the local government assembled a specialized team consisting of police officers, law enforcement officials, and dedicated volunteers. This collaborative effort efficiently regulated traffic flow, facilitated smooth vehicle relocations, and offered assistance with directions, ensuring a seamless and safe experience for all attendees.
Through the fair, which has lasted for nearly 100 years, Shawo town aims to enhance the preservation of its rich historical and cultural heritage, and visitors not only gain a profound insight into local culture, but also foster a stronger sense of cultural identity. (Edited by Zhang Ying)
