Distant and lingering, rich and mellow like aged wine, that's the sound of the xun, a pottery flute from China. Representing the earth group in the ancient bayin ("eight sounds") classification, it boasts a history dating back 7,000 years. The "Xun-Sage" Wu Xunyuan (1824-1902), from Ningjin, a charming county in Dezhou city, located in East China's Shandong province, compiled the Tanghu Xunpu, the first xun music score in Chinese history. The treasured document includes fingering diagrams, playing techniques, a collection of music scores, and insights into xun craftsmanship. Master Pu Shutang is a representative inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of the art of Tanghu xun production. Today, we have arrived at his workshop to experience the unique charm of the xun. (Edited by Du Xiaping)
