A root carver's unique knife craftsmanship

Inspired by traditional Chinese wood carving, craftsman Fu Huibao from Lingcheng district, Dezhou uses a diverse selection of wood and tree roots to create artistic pieces featuring characters, animals, and artifacts.

Chinese wood carving, dating back to the pre-Qin period (pre-221 BC), initially served practical purposes in architecture, furniture and handicrafts. Over the centuries, this art form has flourished and continues to evolve with modern technology and societal advancements.
Through a blend of traditional manual carving techniques and modern craftsmanship, Fu's works exhibit intricate detail, depth, and expansive creative expression. His dedication to the craft is evident in the meticulous process of material selection, creation, peeling, cleaning, polishing and waxing, involving a myriad of tools such as knives, chisels and scissors.
Having been engaged in the wood carving industry for over 30 years, Fu's journey from furniture carving to fine peach wood carving is a reflection of his dedication and artistic growth.
