Sweet art of sugar painting passes down generations
Originating nearly 500 years ago, sugar painting – a unique blend of art and confectionery – has been captivating hearts for centuries and it found its way into the hands of master Tang Weimin, a passionate inheritor of Dongming sugar painting.
Dongming is a county level city located in Heze city in East China's Shandong province. It was there that Tang, deeply influenced by his family's heritage, embarked on a journey to explore the traditional folk craft from a tender age.

Learning the art form from his granddad, he later encountered it again during his travels, witnessing its popularity among children and young adults in various settings like temple fairs and tourist spots.
When describing his commitment to preserving the age-old tradition, Tang reveals his passion. "Sugar painting holds a special place in the hearts of people, both young and old," he declares.
"Its visual appeal and edible nature make it a cherished delight for all. As an inheritor, I am determined to continue its legacy."
With his mastery of sugar painting, Tang aims to introduce more individuals to this beloved cultural heritage – ensuring its enduring presence for generations to come. (Edited by Zhou Yunlai)
