Luban lock: Blending tradition with modern craftsmanship
[Video provided to chinadaily.com.cn]
The Luban lock, an ingenious puzzle toy which originated in ancient China, traces its origins to Lu Ban, a structural engineer during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC).
Crafted from intricately-fitted wooden pieces, this educational toy mirrors the mortise and tenon technique used in historical Chinese architecture. While its design seems straightforward, it's an example of traditional wisdom and craftsmanship.
In Xiajin county, Dezhou, artisan Li Xingdong has taken this age-old concept and infused contemporary crafting methods into the creation of the Luban lock.
His innovative approach offers a blend of intellectual challenge, cultural heritage, and entertainment, highlighting the enduring appeal of Chinese traditional culture. For a closer look, check out the video. (Edited by Cai Liting)
