Foreign teachers experience Chinese New Year festivities in Shandong

Foreign teachers from Taishan Middle School in Tai'an, a prefecture-level city in Shandong province, embraced the spirit of the Chinese New Year during a vibrant cultural event on Feb 2. 

Susan Summer Naja, a Canadian teacher, captured the excitement of traditional performances like dragon and lion dances, conveying her exhilaration to loved ones through video recordings.

Immersed in the festive ambiance at the Daibei Cultural Plaza, the foreign educators marveled at the rich heritage showcased, including shadow puppetry, dough figurines, and other intangible cultural treasures. Naja expressed her delight in her first-hand experience of Chinese customs, from lantern riddles to writing auspicious couplets, finding the Spring Festival both joyful and intriguing.

The interactive zones and blessing rituals captivated the foreign participants, fostering warm exchanges with locals and performers who reciprocated their greetings with enthusiasm. Naja, swept up in the joyous atmosphere, extended Lunar New Year wishes in Mandarin, adding a personal touch to the cultural exchange.

Reflecting on their time in Tai'an, the teachers praised the city's cleanliness, profound historical significance, and the warmth of its people. Katherine Maddela, another teacher, remarked that the event deepened their appreciation for Chinese traditions and provided a window into the hospitality of Shandong province.
