Expats explore Chinese New Year traditions in Shandong
A group of 10 foreign students from countries like Morocco, Pakistan and Tanzania recently had the opportunity to explore the rich traditions of the Chinese New Year in Linshu county – administered by Linyi city in East China's Shandong province.
The adventure began at the bustling Caowa village market.
The students immersed themselves in a variety of delightful experiences, from savoring local delicacies like bingtanghulu – or candied hawthorns – to fried dumplings and rice cakes, to exploring traditional rural clothing and great handicraft products.
"This market is similar to the markets in our country, but ours is called the Monday market," said Alice from Nigeria.
"Being here has brought back memories of my hometown," she added.
The journey continued as the students visited the Nishan Academy in the county's cultural center. Donned in specially prepared hanfu – a traditional Chinese style of clothing – they joined local children in making fish lanterns.

Venturing into the urban area, the students visited a local community and participated in the age-old tradition of writing spring couplets.
With the guidance of a teacher, Alice and another student, called Salma, tried their hand at Chinese calligraphy, earning applause and praise from the audience.

This immersive experience not only allowed the foreign students to partake in the local New Year customs and festivities, but also deepened their understanding of Chinese traditional culture.
The event aimed to serve as a cultural bridge, enhancing their connection and identification with the vibrant and diverse tapestry of Chinese traditions. (Edited by Zhou Yunlai)
