Art of wood carving flourishes in Shandong's county
Caoxian county, located in Heze city – in East China's Shandong province – is gaining well-earned and widespread recognition for its rich history of wood carving.
This traditional and ancient art form was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage item by the State Council – China's Cabinet – back in 2021.

Cai Xiufang, a representative inheritor, has played a crucial role in preserving and leading the artisan community since 1986. Using wood as paper and a knife as a pen, she skillfully brings lifelike peony flowers to life.

The Yunlong Wood Carving Co, where she works, serves as the inheritance base – transforming Heze city's abundant forest resources into a thriving industry that supports rural vitalization.
"I aim to pass on the tradition of Caoxian wood carving and provide employment opportunities for many. Through apprenticeships, nearly two to three hundred people are now engaged in the wood carving industry," Cai Xiufang said.
Nowadays, the locals have embraced innovation, integrating traditional handmade techniques. This has resulted in the emergence of a thriving wood carving industry that significantly contributes to the local economy. (Edited by Zhou Yunlai)
