Noble art of seal engraving flourishes in Shandong province
Each day in Linshu county – administered by Linyi city in East China's Shandong province – the rich tradition of seal engraving comes to life through the skilled, knowing hands of master artisan Liu Xihuai.
Combining calligraphy and engraving, he has become a stalwart guardian of cultural heritage, using his craft to immortalize the history and spirit of his time.
Born and raised in a small village in Linshu, Liu's artistic journey began with a childhood love for writing and drawing. His talent soon earned him the title of xiucai – a term used to describe an educated youth in ancient China – as he composed couplets for neighbors during Chinese New Year celebrations.
Liu's artistic focus shifted when he discovered the captivating world of seal engraving – particularly the red and white contrasts that characterize the craft. Over the past 30 years, Liu has dedicated himself to mastering it, studying calligraphy and seal engraving books and immersing himself in the works of renowned exponents.
