Fermented tofu from Zhangdong village, Dabu town, Yanggu county, Shandong province, is a delicacy that is popular among both local residents and visitors.
While several businesses sell this product, Zhangdong Fermented Tofu, which is made by Zhang Hongxun and his family, is arguably the most famous in the village because it is exceptionally delicate and smooth, qualities made possible by a technique that has been perfected over three generations.
Every year, dozens of vats of tofu - they are fermented over a seven-month period - made by the family are sold for over 100,000 yuan ($14,102). The family also sells its tofu through e-commerce and social media.
To drive rural vitalization, Dabu town has embraced the potential of e-commerce platforms to promote Zhangdong Fermented Tofu and establish it as a local specialty.
Zhang's success story showcases the enduring appeal of traditional homemade delicacies. With their dedication to craftsmanship and innovation in marketing, they have transformed a simple family recipe into a thriving business that brings joy to consumers and contributes to the growth of their community.
