Sun Dandan, from Shanxian county – located in Heze city in East China's Shandong province – recently organized an event in Russia entitled "Shandong Culture: Introduction to Chinese Paper-cutting".

Paper-cutting is one of China's centuries-old folk arts, dating back to the ancient Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220). It uses paper as the primary material and employs clever designs and exquisite skills to cut, fold and paste paper into various intricate patterns, creating very special artistic works.

As a popular folk craft in various regions of China, paper-cutting is used to decorate homes and offices, as well as to produce bookmarks, greeting cards and other gifts that express blessings and care to friends and family.

Additionally, it is used to craft window decorations and door signs for celebrations – such as weddings, birthdays and various traditional holidays – adding to the festive atmosphere.

"I've studied some cutting techniques myself and when I create something beautiful, I teach it to children. If my neighbors and friends are interested in paper-cutting, I do it together with them," Sun Dandan said.

During the event, she taught participants how to create classic round lanterns, Chinese New Year lanterns and designs like double rabbits, which became an instant hit.

"Now I know that the dragon, phoenix and peony patterns have auspicious meanings in China," said a Russian mother – expressing her fascination not only with the beautiful patterns of paper-cutting, but also the cultural significance it embodies.

Sun expected to organize more activities that introduce Chinese culture and traditional folk arts in the future, with the aim of strengthening cultural exchanges between the peoples of China and Russia. (Edited by Zhou Yunlai)
