The autumn harvest is in full swing in Dangji township in Chengwu county – located in Heze city in East China's Shandong province – with ripe dongzao, or jujubes, drawing large groups of tourists to the orchards.
Liu Xiuyun, head of the jujube orchard in Guolou village in the township, has cultivated jujubes for seven years.
To grow the finest jujubes, she established various trial plantations in experimental fields and eventually devised her own cultivation methods. Liu uses natural fertilizers like soybean meal – a nitrogen source in organic production – to nourish her jujube trees, which results in bountiful yields of excellent quality and a sweeter taste.
Dangji township has undertaken many measures to boost industrial development in recent years, with the ultimate goal of igniting the vitality of rural revitalization.
They've turned jujubes into reliable money-spinners to help boost the incomes of residents. According to Liu, this year's big harvest has brought economic gains of around 30,000 yuan ($4,104.36) per mu (0.067 hectares). This success has boosted enthusiasm in the community to further develop the jujube industry in the future. (Edited by Zhou Yunlai)
