In the Laishan district of Yantai city – located in East China's Shandong province – a construction site is currently bustling with activity.

Workers are renovating overhead cables using machines for trenching, as well as clearing and reinforcing the existing network. Meanwhile, another team of workers nearby is cleaning, bundling and addressing potential hazards, as well as removing old, abandoned cables.

They are transforming what was once a chaotic mess into an organized arrangement.

In recent years, Laishan district has been working on the renovation of 54 old residential communities throughout the district. Out of those, 29 have been facing problems with overhead cables.

To avoid having to excavate the roads again in the future, they've decided to bury the cables underground during the renovation process, with 104,000 meters of cables due to be placed underground.

In addition, the district has developed a tailor-made overhead cable renovation plan for each community, specifying the renovation scope, operational standards, criteria for removing old cables and more. This has fostered a collaborative and coordinated working approach among various stakeholders.

According to an official from the bureau of housing and urban-rural development in Laishan district, the overhaul of overhead cables is crucial in enhancing the overall quality of life there, improving its appearance and achieving a fine-tuned urban management. It is also essential to creating a harmonious living environment for the public.

Moving forwards, plans are for Laishan to improve its renovations and build up experiences that can be used later in the other 26 communities. The ultimate goal is to provide residents with a clean, orderly, comfortable and safe living environment, enhancing their happiness and satisfaction. (Edited by Zhou Yunlai)
