Beijing is set to build a record high of 46 key projects this year, with 146 sub-items, said the municipal construction commission Friday.

Most of the projects will involve urban infrastructure such as roads, track routes and relevant supportive facilities, as well as projects for the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, said sources with the commission.

The projects for the Beijing Olympic Games will enter full-scale construction this year, said Vice Mayor Liu Zhihua, urging all government departments and companies participating in key project construction to ensure fulfillment of the construction tasks.

The city completed 22 key projects and began construction of 66 sub-items in 2005, with investment totaling 56.28 billion yuan (about 6.94 billion U.S. dollars).

Construction began in 2005 on works for the 2008 Olympic Games including 11 new venues for various games, expansion on the existing two tournament halls, five more temporary venues for the various matches, plus 23 roads and one bridge connecting to Olympic Games venues.
