Saddam Hussein

From president to prisoner: Iraq's former President Saddam Hussein finally faced his accusers at a trial noted for its many stormy scenes, but little progress in dealing with the actual charges.
On July 18, Saddam was charged by the Special Tribunal with the first of an expected series of charges, relating to the mass killings of the inhabitants of the village of Dujail in 1982 after a failed assassination attempt against him.
A walkout by the defence team, threats of a boycott by Saddam and allegations of torture at the hands of US forces have so far been the highlights of the controversial trial.
