Geography - Demography
Volos is in central Greece, 326 km from Athens and 215 km from Thessaloniki.
The city lies at the foot of mount Pelio, with its green slopes, and in the
crook of the Gulf of Pagasae, with its beautiful shores.
History
The first settlements of the area date from the late Neolithic period. The
most important in Mycenean times was Iolkos, home of the legendary Jason and his
Argonauts. It was from here in the good ship Argo that they set out for Colchis
at the far end of the Black Sea, in quest of the Golden Fleece. Today models of
their ship decorate the city and supply the Municipality and Olympic City with
its official emblem.
Modern Volos dates essentially from mid 19th century. It is one of the
greenest, prettiest, and most go-ahead of Greek cities. The port distributes
exports from the interior of Thessaly and handles trade and passenger traffic
with the Sporades - Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonnisos – and, further afield, the
great harbours of the Mediterranean, Turkey, and the Middle East.
