Farmer in jail on business scheme

A farmer who swindled 1.25 million yuan (US$150,000) in Tianjin was sentenced to 12 years in jail, the New Express News in Guangzhou reported yesterday.

The convict, surnamed Wei, was also fined more than 100,000 yuan (US$12,000).

Wei, from Harbin in Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, pretended to be a company executive and had swindled since August 1998.

Man, 70, detained in passion and murder

A 70-year-old man was detained by police in Tangshang County in East China's Jiangsu Province in connection with a passion and murder case, sina.com reported yesterday.

According to police, Huang Yingfu is a farmer in the county's Guandimiao Township and had a love affair with a widow in the village since 1997.

Huang learned last week that the widow was sleeping with another villager surnamed Li.

He killed Li with a kitchen knife and also seriously wounded the widow, police said.

Huang was arrested by police, who received reports from other villagers, according to the newspaper.

Addicted girl costs mother a remarriage

A woman in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, lost a marriage opportunity because the intended husband learned that her daughter is a drug addict, sina.com reported yesterday.

Li, a retired woman, had divorced five years ago and was ready to start a new family with a retired government official surnamed Liu this year.

When Liu came to Li's home to help with some repair work this month, he found that his future step-daughter was a drug addict and severed all relations with Li.

The mother has sent the daughter to a rehabilitation centre.

Lobster consumption jumps over 4 times

More than 15,000 kilograms of lobsters are consumed per day in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, the New Express News reported yesterday.

The figure is more than four times last year's figure at the same time, according to the report

And the price for lobsters in local markets has grown to 10 yuan (US$1.20) per kilogram.

The potential market in Nanjing has attracted suppliers from the other areas of Jiangsu Province and neighbouring Anhui Province.

SICHUAN

Notice regulates outdoor activities

The Chengdu Municipal Education Department issued a notice banning schools from organizing camping trips outside Sichuan Province, sina.com reported.

Outdoor activities in the province first must be reported to and approved by the education department.
