JAKARTA - Chinese President Xi Jinping met Chairman of Indonesia's People's Consultative Assembly Sidarto Danusubroto on Thursday.

Xi told Danusubroto that China and Indonesia enjoyed a profound traditional friendship, and now bilateral ties ushered in new phase of development.

As major developing countries, China and Indonesia shared similar development goals, a wide range of common interests and topics of common concern, Xi said.

The Chinese president called for joint efforts from both sides to push forward the long-term and steady development of the China-Indonesia comprehensive strategic partnership, which was not only in the interests of both peoples but conducive to regional and world peace and development.

Xi also called on China's National People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference to enhance cooperation with Indonesia's People's Consultative Assembly and boost mutual understanding in order to play a bigger role in pushing forward bilateral relations.

Danusubroto said China-Indonesia relations advanced to a new stage with Xi and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono agreeing to lift bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

The chairman said he agreed with the Chinese president's proposals on boosting friendly cooperation between the two countries.

Indonesia's People's Consultative Assembly was ready to beef up exchanges with China's National People's Congress and Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and contribute to enhancing people-to-people exchanges, he said.

Xi arrived here Wednesday for a two-day state visit to the Southeast Asian country. He will then travel to Malaysia before heading back to the Indonesian resort island of Bali for the 21st economic leaders' meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation.
