More than two million people have left the southern manufacturing base of Dongguan, Guangdong province, since the end of 2008 as a result of impact from the economic downturn, said Li Yuquan, mayor of Dongguan, the Information Times reported.

Dongguan's export business is starting to pickup, but factories are now short of labor, Li said.

Of the nearly seven million population of Dongguan, 5.20 million are immigrants from other parts of the country who headed there to find work, the report said.
