Rescuers have found more than 900 people who escaped mudslides, floods and torrential rains on the southern part of the island.

Major General Hu Jui-chou says the army's special forces found more than 200 survivors from Shiao Lin village, which was buried in a mudslide. They were sheltering in nearby field on Tuesday. There could still be several hundred people trapped in the village.

More than 500 people were found in Min Tsu, and another 200 were discovered in Chin He. The three villages are all in the same area. Morakot dumped as much as 80 inches (two meters) of rain over the weekend on Taiwan and caused the worst flooding in 50 years.
