Out-of-control car kills five in E China

NANJING: Five people are dead and four were injured after a car careered out of control through a busy street in east China late Tuesday.

The car crashed into a street lamp, then hit a watermelon stand at 8:20 pm in downtown Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu, said an official with the municipal government.

The car hit nine passersby and six other vehicles, the official said.

Three people died at the scene and two died later in hospital. Four others were slightly injured, the official said.

Officials from the municipal and provincial governments are investigating the incident.
