Six killed after elevator plummets 34 floors

NANJING -- Six workers were killed and 11 others injured on Wednesday after an elevator fell at a construction site in the eastern Chinese city of Wuxi, local work safety officials said.

The elevator, carrying the 17 workers, was descending from the top of a 34-storey building when the accident happened at around 10:30 am, an eyewitness said.

Four of the victims were killed on the spot, while two others died after medical efforts failed, said an official with the municipal work safety bureau of Wuxi, Jiangsu Province.

The local government has ordered every effort to save the 11 injured workers.

An investigation into the accident is under way.
