Friis Arne Petersen, the Danish ambassador to China, suggested more Chinese should bike rather than drive.

During the embassy's open-house day in Beijing on Sunday, the ambassador said city governments should separate auto traffic from biking to encourage people to bike. Car lanes could be cut and the space saved could be reserved for bikes only, Peterson told chinadaily.com.cn.

"This may need a huge investment, but governments should not only think about highways or metros only," he said.

But the ambassador did not comment about the possible influence on the Chinese economy if people go back to bikes.

Dan Stubbergaard, principal architect of COBE, told chinadaily.com.cn some technologies are being used in bike manufacturing in Denmark to make family travel by bikes feasible.
