Can one life belong to only one country?
General Hong Shui left Vietnam as a young man to join the Chinese revolution. He endured extraordinary hardship to complete the Red Army's 25,000-li Long March and became the only foreign national among the founding generals of the People’s Republic of China.
What was General Hong Shui really like?
A man of many talents, he had a deep love of Chinese culture. He often hummed Peking Opera tunes and even dreamed of returning to Vietnam to form a Peking Opera troupe.
The bonds between people can transcend national borders and even span generations. Today, new generations carry forward the friendship between China and Vietnam that General Hong Shui helped build and protect.
